Ladysmith dragonboaters needed

The Ladysmith Dragonboaters are looking for a few good rowers to fill out their daytime team.Since starting the group last year, the response has been overwhelming, said Susan Erickson, one of the team captains. So much so that they had to add two teams, one in the evening and one in the day.“For the daytime paddling team is what we are looking for,” said Erickson.Erickson noted the daytime practices may be an inconvenience for some and their practice times may change.Right now, the team gets together on Saturday and Tuesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 4 p.m.The boats are focussed on fun and fitness, but Erickson noted this year people can join the race component of the team.“Anyone can join the race team.”Erickson said aside from the health benefits, there is a very rewarding social side to dragonboating. Being a part of the club even helped her forge new friendships after moving back to the area.“For me, it’s a good way to get to know new women,” said Erickson.Erickson said the biggest draw for her is the fact there is such a broad range of women who take part in the activity. “It’s a good way to meet new people.”For people who are interested in dragonboating there is a fitness and yoga class geared towards the activity at the Frank Jameson Community Centre.Erickson said there are different fitness levels, but suggests the sport to people who are already somewhat active.“You don’t need to be a super athlete, but you need some fitness level.”“It’s meant to encourage fun and fitness.”There are different positions on a dragonboat team and Erickson said there are clinics where new members can learn about the different posts. The clinics are included with the $150 registration fee and include teaching with a steering clinic, paddling clinic  and water safety. The season begins April 1. Anyone interested in dragonboating can call Erickson at 250-245-0474.
