The Ladysmith Secondary School’s Senior Boys and Girls basketball teams both came away with wins in their most recent match ups last Thursday.

The girl’s team was in the opening game of a  tournament at Duncan Christian School and came away with a 48-36 win against the home team.

Piper Doerkson led the team in scoring with  16 points.

Chandler Gresmak also came up big for the Ladysmith girls scoring 10 of the team’s 12 points in the fourth quarter.

The remainder of the weekend tournament was cancelled on Friday as school were closed on Duncan.

Coach Mike Lidgate said the team continues to improve each game.

The senior girls’ first league game was scheduled for last night (Dec. 13) against tough opponent Mark R. Isfeld Secondary.

In seniors boys action from last week, the team launched a major come from behind victory with three minutes remaining as they trailed by seven points.

“It was an exciting game,” said coach Matt Rickett about the  team’s stunning 45-44 victory over Nanaimo Christian School.

“We just put lots of pressure on the ball and we pressed them to make turnovers.”

Mitch Docherty was a standout in the final seconds, stealing the ball from Nanaimo.

The win improves the team’s record in league play to 2-1.

The boys’ next game is at home on Jan. 10 against Comox Highland Secondary.

Rickett said LSS matches up well against opponents and is led by guards  Rhys Mazurenko and Spencer Godlonton.

“I think we’ll do well this season,” he said. “I think Kwalikum’s going to be the team to beat in our division right now.”

“We’re a small team so we have to be smarter, quicker and faster.”
