Ladysmith run raises over 4,000 lbs of food for resource centre initiative

The 2016 Cinnamon Bun Run Fun on Sunday helped raise 4,074 pounds of food for the Ladysmith Resource Centre’s Food Bank.

The 2016 Cinnamon Bun Run Fun on Sunday helped raise 4,074 pounds of food for the Ladysmith Resource Centre’s Food Bank.

The annual charity event had 475 runners and walkers completing 5km and 10km distances leaving from Ladysmith Secondary School.

However, the competition takes an interesting twist and challenges participants to predict their time and see how close they can come to matching it without the help of a stopwatch.

Julia Louie was  the winner and came within 1.5 seconds of her predicted time of 1:08:42.

Elizabeth O’Brien and Colby Scott followed close behind, crossing the finish line only 2.2 seconds  beyond their goal time.

Of course, the main treat that awaited finishers was a tasty cinnamon bun handed out by the dozens of volunteers.

New for this year was a $10 fee when registering online, but children under the age of 12 could still run or walk for free.

Participants also generously unloaded their pockets and placed more than $280 in the donation box.

Add that to the money raised through the online registration process and corporate donations, the total tops out at $2,485 dollars.

The run is organized annually by the Ladysmith Striders Running Group.

The next local race takes place at Transfer Beach on July 15 as part of the Vancouver Island Trail Running Series.
