The Surrey Falcons stopped the Vernon Sladen Moore Lakers 4-1 in Sunday’s A final of the Vernon Pee Wee Rep Girls Hockey Tournament at Civic Arena.
The undefeated Lakers finished first in their pool and played the Falcons tough in a very exciting and fast-paced game. The Lakers outshot Surrey 35-20, but had trouble solving goalie Tamara Williams, who was beat by Cassidy Marshall on a feed from Andie Kaneda.
The Lakers had a strong weekend from their defensive core of Tylee Cooper, Makenna Southam, Teira Joseph, Ailish Curran, Courtney Graves and Amy Rae Fox. Goalie Samantha Head was stellar in allowing five goals against in round-robin play.
The Sladen Moore girls brushed off the Abbotsford Ice 4-1 Saturday morning at Wesbild Centre on goals from Kaneda, Marshall, Emily Clarke and Mairyn Tucker. Jordan Butler and Kendra Ostafie each earned two assists. Carly Southam supplied superb forechecking.
The Lakers then defeated Williams Lake Timberwolves 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Civic with the offence powered by Tucker, Kaneda, Clarke and affiliate player Abbey Magnus. D-man Amy Fox counted three helpers.
The Vernon Seed Orchard Sharks bowed 2-1 in overtime to William Lake in consolation play Sunday to decide seventh place.
Brittany Jackson scored the Sharks’ lone goal in the third period. Bailey Berndt (game MVP) was sensational in goal, but was fooled by a double deflection in the first overtime period. Taylor Cousins was the game MVP.
Nikala Debalinhard was MVP and Cailee Bauml scored as the Sharks lost 6-1 to the Kamloops Mystix in their opener.
The Sharks bowed 7-3 to the Prince George Cougars Saturday morning with Taylor Vandale sniping the first goal after a great passing play by Taylor DaSilva and Molly Crandlemire.
Hannah Scherck scored her first of two by potting a rebound on a Jackson shot. Scherck scored again after cleaning up a scramble caused by Cousins and Erin Poland. Berndt took MVP.
The Seed Orchard gang then fell 9-0 to Surrey with Cathou Bauml earning MVP. Lexes Adams played defence for the first time and competed well, while Brooke Berube played a solid two-way game.
