Lakers rugby team seeks financial help

The Pen High Lakers senior boys rugby team is looking for financial support for provincials

The Pen High Lakers boys rugby team needs the community’s help to go to provincials.

The Lakers punched their ticket to provincials after defeating the Kelowna Secondary Owls in the Okanagan Valley championship.

Advancing to provincials was unexpected for a program that did not win a game over the last two seasons. With no thoughts of making it to provincials, fundraisers weren’t planned to cover costs for a provincial championship trip. The cost to enter the tournament is $685 and bussing costs are estimated at $1,450. Add in motel and meals and the trip is expected to cost approximately $4,000.

The team has received support for the Penticton Lakeside Resort, as well as the Harlequins Rugby Club. Anyone interested in supporting the team financially is asked to contact Lakers athletics director Stephen Grant at SGrant@summer.com or call Sommerfeldt at 250-809-2316. Cheques to help the team can be made out to School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha) for the Lakers rugby team.
