With lights, the Kalamalka Lakers and Seaton Sonics may have played until midnight Thursday.

Instead, they went to a shootout, with the sun quickly fading, and the Lakers stopped the Sonics 4-2 (0-0) in the North Zone Senior AA Boys Soccer Championship final at Kal.

Both teams advance to the Okanagan Valley playdowns starting Friday at Marshall Field. The schedule will be announced Monday.

The Lakers and Sonics battled hard in a scoreless regulation and five-minute overtime.

Alex Kreutz, Matt Kreutz, Brett Jewell and Lucas Ross scored goals for Kal in the shootout. Alex Baxter, a first-year soccer player, showed great skill in the Seaton net, getting his hands on three of the four goals.

Tom Pool and Finley McPhie supplied the Seaton shootout tallies past standout Kal keeper Sean Bradbury.

“It was a great game today,” said Laker head coach Cari Dyck. “We were really short on the bench with only four subs, but the boys really stepped it up and hung in when really tired. Steven Goebel was our man of the match. He played all game and worked tirelessly, creating turnovers and controlling the midfield.”

Said Seaton coach Sarah Kwantes: “Tonight’s game was intense. The Sonics played a great game, as they battled Kal for first place in the North Zone playoffs. The boys are really looking forward to the Valley Championships.”
