Placing 10th at provincials in Richmond on the Nov. 25 weekend capped a successful season for the Pen High Lakers junior girls volleyball team.
After playing well the week before during the Valley Championship, Lakers coach Robert Gunning said it was an accomplishment just getting to provincials. On day one, the Lakers finished second in their pool as they defeated Cedars Christian (Prince George) and Smithers, each in two straight sets. Their only loss was to eventual finalist Langley Fundamental.
“The only disappointing loss of the tournament came early on day two in the round of 16,” said Gunning. “The Lakers served poorly and were a little sluggish against St. Thomas Aquinas. STA played very consistently, dug everything we hit at them and won the match in two straight.”
A bounce back effort helped the Lakers defeat Handsworth followed by another win over Cedars Christian. They lost their final match 2-1 to Lambrick Park from Vancouver Island.
“We look forward to good things from this group as they move up to the senior ranks next season,” said Gunning.
Making up the Lakers team are Gunning, Maddi Everton, Georgia Hurry, Hayden Craig, Abi McCluskey, Erin Craig, Melike Korur, Lindsey Jones, Annaka Ramsay, Jo Gunning, Mikala Vujcich, Starr Shaw and Ginger Herbert.
