The competition was held on Feb. 3 and Feb. 4 and nine schools, including LDSS competed for two berths at the provincial championships to be held in Kimberley from Feb. 28 through March 4, 2011.
A total of 22 LDSS students attended the North Zone Championships.
“We had 13 boy snow boarders, four boy skiers, four girl snow boarders and two girl skiers,” said Patti Dube, LDSS teacher and snowboarding and ski team coach.
“The conditions were great and the course was perfect,” Dube said, adding that each one of the students raced to their fullest potential over the two day competition.
The boys snow boarders placed first in the zones overall, with five students placing in the top 10 out of 74 racers.
LDSS students, Collin Bergen placed second overall, André Dubé fourth, David Little seventh, Ryan Wilson ninth and Logan Beedle came in 10 position.
“The top six boys get to attend the provincials in Kimberly.
LDSS boy skiers placed second overall in the zone championships.
Students, Brian Vossen placed fourth, André Dubé in eighth, Connor Vossen in 13 position and Stewart Cowan placed 21 out of 38 racers.
“They too will be going to provincials,” Dube said.
“Our girls [boarders] placed third overall at the competition.”
LDSS students, Elise Dubé placed third, Mikayla Fairley eleventh, Jane Price came in 15 position and Tanis Bjarnason placed 22 out of 27 racers.
“As Elise placed third she will be going on to the provincials,” Dube said. Amy Avdeeff, LDSS’s lone girl skier raced admirably placing seventh in a highly competitive field of 18.
“All of the racers performed extremely well and we are very proud of them,” Dube said.
“Based on our costs of traveling to the provincials last year, each student will need to pay $621 which includes fuel, accommodations, lift passes fees,” Dube said.
She went on to say, “This is a costly adventure for the students so we are currently looking for support from the community to help lower the cost for the students.” If you are interested in helping the students attend the provincials in Kimberley at the end of the month, contact Patti or Pat Dube at 250-692-7733.
