Langley’s Thunderbird Fast Draw Club members connected with history at the Annie Oakley Days Index Fast Draw Championship in Ohio recently.

Eight members of the local sport shooting club competed. Member Ioan Nica placed third overall while Shawn Murphy took fifth. Nica also broke some world records while there.

The event was also when the World Fast Draw Association gave out its top awards. Murphy is now rated third best in the world while fellow T’bird Den Robinson is sixth overall and Nica is seventh. In the women’s division, Karen Robinson is third, followed by Paula Murphy in fourth and Nicole Franks in fifth overall.

After the Ohio competition, Thunderbird members took part in the Cloverdale Hunting and Fishing Show.

T-bird vice chairman Den Robinson noted that the show allowed the club to get another 1,500 signatures in its call for the fast draw demonstrations to return to the event.

Last year Surrey council stopped the demos in what he considers a “misguided” attempt to reduce shootings in Surrey.

Next up for the Thunderbirds is fast draw demonstrations at Fort Langley’s Canada Day festivities.

Later the club will host the World Fast Draw Association championships which are held during the Aldergrove Fair on July 15 and 16.
