Langley hockey teams scramble with busy winter scheduled

A hockey game at home was squeaked out by Calgary, then the Giants were blanked by Everett.

Vancouver Giants face off against the Cougars in Prince George on Tuesday and then Kelowna Rockets this weekend at home.

They’re anxious for a win after a disappointing weekend of play at Langley Events Centre and in Everett.

The G-Men were quashed 4-3 just a minute and nine seconds into overtime Friday night at LEC, in a game against the Calgary Hitmen.

In the game on home ice, points were put on the board by Giants’ Owen Hardy, Johnny Wesley, and Ty Ronning.

Goalie Ryan Kubic was credited with making 28 saves, and the Giants out shot the Hitmen 34-32.

That close game was followed by another nail-biter south of the 49th Parallel on Saturday night.

That’s when the Giants fell 1-0 to the Silvertips at the XFINITY Arena on what’s referred to as a ricochet shot.

Everett out shot Vancouver 41-21, the single, winning goal coming in the second period as Silvertips’ Bradly Goethals redirected the puck off Kubic’s skate and into the net after a rebound off the end boards.

The Giants are set to head north to Prince George for a game against the Cougars on Tuesday night, then they’re set to be back on home ice Saturday to take on Kelowna.  Tickets are available at 604-444-2687 or online at vancouvergiants.com.

Scoring duties were handled by Angus Crookshank who earned himself three points, and two from Cooper Leitch. The singles were courtesy of Gavin Payne, Cameron Ginnetti, Zac Masson, Ryan Barrow, John Schuldt and Brendan Budy.

Feb. 7 saw the Langley squad up in Williams Lake where they racked up a 5-2 victory. The next four matches are road games before home ice Feb. 20.

Aldergrove Kodiaks

The Aldergrove team grounded the Abbotsford Pilots in their 8-1 match in the neighbouring community.

The Kodiaks kept the Pilots from scoring until the third frame, and finished the game outshooting Abbotsford 48 to 28.
