Sharing pool space with Canada’s elite swimmers brought out the best in Langley Olympian Hillary Metcalfe.
Metcalfe was among four members from Langley’s year-round swim club who competed in the 2016 Canadian Olympic swimming trials, held April 5 to 10 in Toronto.
At the trials, LOSC was represented by Metcalfe, Justin Schramm, Chelsea Borrowdale, and Renae Ledoux.
These Olympic trials brought together the top swimmers in Canada, as well as top swimmers from New Zealand and other countries.
For swimmers to earn a place on the Canadian Olympic team, they had to place first or second in their qualified event.
Metcalfe, 17, led the way with her four qualified swims (400m IM, 100m breaststroke, 200m IM, and 200m breaststroke).
She rose to the occasion by pushing herself against fellow Canadian swimmers and swimmers from abroad, while achieving best times and making a consolation final in the women’s 200m metre breaststroke, placing 16th with a time of 2:34.00.
Ledoux, 16, qualified for two swims (100m and 200m breaststroke), finishing 26th in the 100m metre breaststroke and 33rd in the 200m metre breaststroke.
Justin Schramm, 18, qualified in the men’s 200m metre butterfly, finishing 44th. Chelsea Borrowdale (16) qualified in the women’s 200m metre breaststroke and finished 36th.
“We had spent a great amount of time preparing for trials and the swimmers successfully brought their best to the competition,” Olympians head coach Brian Metcalfe said.
