Former Canadian Football League star Cory Philpot is the new head coach of the BC Football Conference Langley Rams.

Langley Rams hire ex-BC Lions star Cory Philpot as new head coach

A Grey Cup champion with the Leos in 1994, Philpot takes over for Howie Zaron

A man who went by the nickname ‘Quick Six’ during his Canadian Football League playing days is taking over as head coach of the Langley Rams.

Cory Philpot takes the reins with one month to go before the 2021 BC Football Conference season kicks off, but he’s no stranger to the team. Philpot joined the Langley coaching staff in 2018, just in time to help the BCFC team to back-to-back Cullen Cup titles and Canadian Bowl appearances.

His involvement with the BCFC stretches back to 2006 when he coached the now-defunct Vancouver Trojans. He sat on the league’s board of directors from 2010 to 2017 and in 2015 he became the first president of the BC Provincial Football Association (BCPFA).

Philpot takes over for Howie Zaron, who faces a pending criminal charge of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

As a CFL player, Philpot was a lightning quick running back who wore jersey No. 6, hence the nickname. He won a Grey Cup with the BC Lions in 1994 and was a CFL all-star in 1995 when he set a since-eclipsed single-season touchdown record with 22. Philpot spent eight seasons in the CFL with the Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He rushed for 5213 yards on 882 carries and had 46 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 173 passes for 1870 yards and 11 more majors.

His Rams kick off the 2021 campaign Sept. 11 when they visit the Vancouver Island Raiders.
