Langley Rams rout Broncos 51-7, improve to 2-1

Second straight week Langley junior football team holds opponent to less than 130 yards of net offence

The defence delivered yet again in week three.

The Langley Rams held the Kamloops Broncos to 130 yards of net offence while the offence used a balanced attack — 148 yards along the ground and 221 yards through the air — to post a 51-7 victory on Saturday night at McLeod Athletic Park.

About the only blemish for the Rams was some penalty problems as Langley was flagged 18 times for 129 yards.

“There is always room to improve. I thought we were a little flat and undisciplined in the first quarter,” said Rams coach Khari Joseph.

“But I thought we responded well to half-time adjustments. We came out in the third quarter and played hard and cleaned up some of the issues we had in the first half, which is always good.”

Langley scored the only 10 points of the first quarter and led 20-7 at the half. They blew the game open with 17 points in the third quarter and then another 14 in the fourth.

Joseph was not happy surrendering the touchdown as that drive was aided by numerous penalties, including one for taunting. It came just before the half and he was happy the team showed better discipline in the second half as they committed just five penalties over the final 30 minutes, compared to 13 in the first half.

The win improved the Rams to 2-1 while the Broncos fell to 0-3.

For the second straight week, kicker Tiernan Docherty earned BCFC special teams player of the week honours.

Docherty was good on all three field goal attempts — including one from 50 yards out — as well as six convert attempts. He also had a 42.5 yard punting average.

The Rams played two quarterbacks in the game with both pivots going 8-for-13 and similar yardage.

Colby Peters threw for 110 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while Stephen Legare threw for 111 yards and one touchdown.

Joseph said the quarterback position was just one of several positions where the coaching staff played multiple players.

“We still have (players) fighting for starting roles,” he said.

“If two guys are close in terms of competition, I think it is only fair to let them battle it out during a game. And then we will break down the film and go from there.”

“Practice can only give you so much information. You have to let guys play when the bullets are really flying, to really evaluate them.”

He did say that they hope to have the starters set in the next week or two.

And at 2-1 nearly a third of the way through the 10-week season, Joseph is happy with how things are coming together.

“The things I love as a coach with these guys is that when we make adjustments, we are able to absorb the information and apply it, whether that is before the game or at halftime,” he said.

“They are receptive to coaching and to the adjustments. They are taking it and actually using it right away.

“Every game is an opportunity for us to figure out who we are. I am getting a better sense of the overall team.”

The Rams host the 0-3 Huskers on Saturday night at McLeod Athletic Park with kick-off at 7 p.m.
