Langley rowers take silver

Two locals were on a team that placed second in a world meet.

A women’s rowing team that included Langley participants has placed second overall at the 2017 World Championships.

Kristin Bauder and Lisa Roman of Langley, both members of the Western Rowing Club, are part of the Women’s Eight team that competed in Sarasota, Fla., during the final recently.

The team won the silver medal in the Oct. 1 final.

Romania took gold, with Canada just 0.18 seconds behind the winners. New Zealand took bronze.

The race broke an 11-year winning streak by the U.S.

“We are so proud,” said cox Kristin Kit.

“We stuck to our race plan and this was an amazing race for us.”

“That extra rep race was a great opportunity to figure out what was going on in the boat and use it to power us forward in the Finals,” said rower Susanne Grainger.

“As our coach always says, ‘you don’t always need to be the best crew, you just need to be the best crew on that day.’ We were fine tuning, and more fine tuning to make sure we had the best race and today was that day,” said an emotional Christine Roper.

Bauder and Roman were rowing with a team that included Hillary Janssens of Cloverdale, along with rowers from Victoria, Toronto, and one from Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Roman also rowed in the Women’s Four team that came ninth overall on Sept. 30.

• Kristin Bauder (Western Rowing Club – Langley, BC)

• Susanne Grainger (London Rowing Club – London, ON)

• Nicole Hare (Calgary Rowing Club – Calgary, AB)
