Langley Rugby Club: Five decades of scrums and tackles

The local club is having its 50th anniversary this season, and the first celebration is Sept. 22.

The 2018-19 season for the Langley Rugby Club will feature some special events off and on the field as the club marks its 50th anniversary.

“The L.R.C. played its first game around the time of the first manned moon landing and just before the Beatles disbanded,” said Craig Angeltvedt, with the club. “Although only 12 men ever walked on the moon, over 1,000 men, women, boys and girls have proudly worn the Langley team colours for the past half century.”

The club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary with a number of events, with the first one taking place on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Langley Rugby Club field at 21280 Crush Cres.

The kick-off event will include a women’s second division game at 11:15 a.m., a second division game at 12:45 a.m., music, and games. There’s also a salmon barbecue at 1 p.m. with only 120 tickets available at $10 apiece.

The celebration is also a chance for former players and the community to connect and reminisce.

The L.R.C. organization has enjoyed great team success throughout the years, winning many league and provincial championships, Angeltvedt noted. A number of the players have stuck gold as well, playing for regional, provincial and national teams.

It started with one men’s team. About 30 years ago, the club was able to purchase the land on Crush Crescent where it is still based. Today the club runs clubs for kids as young as five, all the way to adults.

“Anyone who has ever played for, or supported the Langley Rugby Club, during the past 50 years, is invited to join us on Saturday,” he added.
