The Langley Warriors A basketball team took gold at the first annual January Jam Special Olympics basketball tournament held at Walnut Grove Secondary School, edging out their North Shore rivals in the final medal round.
The Warriors win was no surprise, coming after the co-ed team won the national championship at the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Games held in Vancouver.
The Langley tournament marked the return to competition of player Sean Annan, who suffered a compound leg fracture during the Vancouver games.
“It was great to see him back,” said assistant coach Peter Potomak, who estimated Annan played for “70 per cent” of the games, scoring several points in the process.
The two-day competition wrapped up Sunday.
The January Jam drew 18 teams and more than 200 players and coaches.
“It was an awesome thing,” Potomak said.
Langley will continue to host the event in future years.
The Warriors roster for the tournament also included Matthew Williams, Carson Buzdegan, Karl Beugh, Alastair Singh, Kyle Litfin, Kailyn Potomak, Trevin Martel, Christian Burton, Alexander Singh and Chris Beugh.
