The Langley Xtreme 2001 rep B girls softball team ended its weekend in emphatic fashion.
In the gold medal game of the 2015 South Surrey/White Rock (SSWR) U14 fastpitch tournament, the Xtreme defeated the South Delta Invaders 11-3 in five innings, in a game cut short by the mercy rule.
The win capped an undefeated weekend from the Xtreme, who went undefeated in six games to capture their first tournament title of 2015.
Langley opened with an 8-0 win over the SSWR Thunder 01.
Pitchers Kayla Michael and Piper French combined for a two-hit shutout while Sierra Miller came through with two RBIs in the win.
In their second game, the Xtreme defeated the Maple Ridge Rage 01 by an 8-3 count.
An all-around effort with strong pitching and a balanced hitting attack was led by Jacqueline Hudson with two hits and two runs.
Next, the Xtreme faced a scrappy Cloverdale Fury team and eked out a 5-4 victory.
Ashley Preston hit a clutch two out, two RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning, and then Rebecca Courneyea smacked a triple to right center in the fourth inning before scoring the go-ahead run on a single by Jordan Quechuck to secure the win.
Langley’s fourth round robin game was against the South Delta Invaders, whom the Xtreme had lost 4-2 in a tournament earlier this season.
Offensively, Sierra Miller led the way with three RBIs and Kaitlyn Cowie chipped in with an RBI.
On defence, another strong pitching effort from both Michael and French helped their team cruise to a 7-2 victory.
This victory helped the Xtreme secure first place in the round robin, which set up a date with their rivals from Abbotsford in the semifinals.
Versus Abbotsford, Xtreme came out strong, bolting out to a 5-0 lead after three innings.
Abbotsford battled back to make it 6-4, but that is close as they got as the Xtreme defence shut their opponents down to secure the win.
Jayna Hagen scored two runs while Nadia Hudson made a fine play at third base to secure the win and allow Langley to move on to Sunday afternoon’s gold medal game against the Invaders.
In the lopsided championship game, Sam Cox made two spectacular catches in right field and Taryn Jenkins homered in the fourth inning to lead the way with two RBIs.
By tourney’s end, the Xtreme – guided by coach Rob French, assistant coach Bill Cox, and bench coach Holly French – went undefeated in six games to win their first tournament of the 2015 season.
