From day one, Angus Redmond has made a seamless transition from junior A to NCAA hockey.
A shutout in his first start for the Michigan Tech Huskies has led to a stellar freshman campaign for the young man from Langley.
And his play has not gone unnoticed, as the 21-year-old Redmond is among the initial list of players up for the Hobey Baker Award.
Redmond has fit in seamlessly, leading all NCAA goaltenders with a 1.61 goals against average and his .927 save percentage ranks 12th. He also has a record of 15-4-5, which ranks his seventh nationally, and has three shutouts this season. His play earned him the WCHA rookie of the month for November.
He has played in 25 of Michigan Tech’s 32 games so far this season.
Prior to joining the Huskies, Redmond played in the BCHL with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks from 2012 to 2016.
In 132 BCHL games, Redmond was 59-61-7 with eight shutouts. He posted a 2.94 goals against average and a .906 save percentage.
Redmond is one of five former BCHLers — including Langley Rivermen standout Mario Puskarich — who are in the running for the award.
Puskarich is in his senior season and is captain of the Vermont Catamounts.
He has eight goals and 15 points in 20 games this season and has 48 goals and 103 points in 126 games for Vermont.
Puskarich won the 2013 BCHL scoring title.
The Hobey Baker Award is given annually to college hockey’s top player. Candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should also be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.
Fan voting takes place between now and March 5.
Phase two of the fan balloting will begin on March 16 and will feature the top 10 candidates.
The top three finalists will be revealed March 30 with the winner announced on April 7.
