Ray Kimoto of the tennis tournament committee expects more than 80 players in men’s and ladies singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Players have until 6 p.m. to enter by calling Kimoto at 545-8579 or by reaching him at: tennisraykimoto@gmail.com.
“So far, we have participants from Vancouver (5), Abbotsford (2), Washington (2), Calgary, the Interior and the Okanagan,” said Kimoto. “T-shirts will be given to the participants to commemorate this 100th annual Labour Day Championships.”
Events will be men’s and ladies’ A and B singles, A and B doubles, and A and B mixed doubles.
Draws will be posted at the club by 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31. Play goes from Sept. 2-5. Semifinals and championship matches will be best-of-three sets.
Youngster Greg Maarschalk of Kelowna defeated Vernon’s Murray Bennetto, 48, in last year’s A singles final.
Records show the men’s doubles champions back in 1911 were R.F. Theed and P.G. Dodwell, while the ladies doubles winners were E.M. May and E.R. Simpson.
The first men’s singles champion listed is Capt. G.G. Davis in 1928, while the earliest mixed doubles winning duo was G.D. Husband and W.G. Heggie, in 1920.
There was no competition in the war years between 1941-46. The tournament was rained out in 1976 and 1980.
