The Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club held its final indoor tournament of the season, and finishing first and clinching the Qualicum Foods trophy were skip Bill Davenport, Ruth Brodie (third) and Martin Sichert (lead) — all from Qualicum Beach.

“This is not the first win for this team as they had won our March tournament, so guess they will be the team to beat next year,” QBLBC’s Jane Nielsen said after the tourney, played out April 6-7, adding Qualicum Beach bowlers “dominated this event but Nanaimo and Parksville players also placed in this event.

“It took some good bowling (mind you there was the odd wick and lucky shots).”

There were no undefeated teams in the tourney, and the Bob Hayward team (Judi Ritchey and Keith Alexander) also advanced to the final.

“Again we had a full complement of 12 teams with bowlers from Qualicum, Parksville, Nanaimo and Port Alberni with each team playing five games over the two days,” said Nielsen, adding “what a way to end the winter indoor season — good competition and very, very close games.

Also in the mix and having a ball was the spry one, 90-year-old Edie Jacques, who “still bowls up a storm. She was on the winning team in our February tournament,” said Nielsen. “An amazing woman as she not only bowls but is a curler as well.”
