Tristan Smyth of Maple Ridge pushes hard to the finish line in the summer heat as he finishes first in his heat for the men’s 400-metre wheelchair race during the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops on Saturday. Smyth eventually won gold in the 400-metre final, as well as in the 200-metre and 1,500-metre events, giving him a gold medal sweep in all the events he was entered in. “This sport is still pretty new to me,” said Smyth who was injured in January, went through rehabilitation at the G.F. Strong rehab centre in Vancouver and started training in athletics in March. “I’d like to see how far I can go though. These Games have been a very positive experience for me.” The News will feature full local results from the event in this Friday’s edition.
