The Kelowna Sun Devils took three of four games from the hometown South Fraser Giants to remain firmly in top spot in B.C. Baseball’s midget AAA circuit.
On Saturday at Mackie Park, the Sun Devils recovered from a 4-1 deficit after five to edge the Giants 5-4 in an extra inning. Carson Moberg delivered a walk off single in the eighth to score Nathan Ringness-Law with the decisive run.
Ringness-Law had a big game offensively with three hits, two RBIs and a pair of steals. Jay Taylor picked up the win in relief.
Game 2 saw South Fraser bounce back with a 12-7 win, just Kelowna’s second setback of the 2017 regular season. Some defensive miscues and pitching mistakes were the ‘Devils undoing.
“Defensively, we were just not us,” said pitching coach Derek Renneberg.
On Sunday morning, the Sun Devils rebounded with a 10-3 win. Almost a year to the date and against the same team in the same park where Kensington Renneberg became the first female player to record a win at the 18U AAA level, she took to the hill and went 5 1/3 innings to pick up her second win of the season.
Ringness-Law struck out four in relief to preserve the win. Offensively, the Sun Devils smashed 14 hits and allowed only one error defensively.
Rookie Jaimes Guidon led the way going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while rookie Dreyton Nelmes and Gavin Barrett each collected a pair of hits and two RBIs.
In the series finale, Kelowna won 8-5. Starter Jaimes Guidon went 6 2/3 to earn the victory. Ringness-Law picked up the save.
Noah Ringness-Law and Barrett each had a pair of hits, while Kurtis Wall celebrated his dad’s birthday with a solo home run.
The Sun Devils (16-2) return to action Wednesday, June 7 when they host the Vernon Canadians at Edith Gay Park.
