B.C. athletes owned the podium during the Western Canada Summer Games in Fort McMurray, Alta.
Team B.C. walked away with 134 gold medals, 85 silvers and 61 bronzes for a 280 total. Alberta placed second with 226 and Manitoba finished with 144 medals and in third.
Four Vernon area athletes brought home serious hardware.
Meredith Levorson must have paid an overweight fee at the airport when her luggage was weighed down because of all her medals.
She won gold in the 4×300 metre freestyle relay in eight minutes, four seconds and 11 milliseconds at the Syncrude Aquatic Centre.
She won gold in the 4x100m frees relay in 3:43.80 and gold in the 4x50m free relay in 1:42.91.
She captured a bronze in the 100m free 0:55.92. She just missed out on her fifth medal after placing fourth in the 50m free with a time of 0:26.34.
Team Alberta edged Connor Glennon’s B.C. squad 1-0 in the boys soccer final Sunday at Syncrude Athletic Park.
Despite outplaying and outshooting Team Alberta, Team B.C. could not capitalize and the game went to extra time. With under five minutes remaining, Team Alberta was awarded a questionable free kick just outside the box and converted the kick to take the gold.
“It was a tough way to lose, however, the entire experience has been great and we all have our aim at taking gold at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg,” said Glennon.
Glennon scored one goal and added four helpers in B.C.’s 11-0 laugher in the opener over the Yukon.
In their second game, Glennon played hero as he rattled one off the crossbar and in with two minutes remaining to lift B.C. over Saskatchewan 1-0.
Gritty Saskatchewan played a very defensive game that stopped wave after wave of B.C. attacks.
Glennon is back to Seaton Secondary this fall to continue his studies and be part of the Whitecaps Academy. He will also continue to anchor the TOFC U17 boys team this year.
Fulton volleyball standout Danny Aspenlieder won silver in boys indoor volleyball. B.C. lost the gold medal game to Alberta 3-0 Sunday at the Syncrude Sports and Wellness Centre.
Armstrong’s Tyra Gilbert turned in a strong showing in multiple athletic events.
Gilbert finished fifth in 100m hurdles with a time of 15:51, her 10.68m leap was good enough for seventh in the triple jump and she placed 10th in the long jump with 4.75m Sunday at Timberlea Community Park.
The closing ceremonies for the 2015 Wood Buffalo Games took place Sunday night at SMS Equipment Stadium inside Shell Place. The ceremonies were headlined by The Sheepdogs.
Just hours after helping Alberta win gold in men’s soccer, Fort McMurray’s Austin Couture served as his province’s flag bearer.
