LMG Pringle still undefeated

Six minutes into the game, it was pretty evident how things would go.

Six minutes into the game, it was pretty evident how things between the Cowichan LMG Pringle soccer side and Victoria’s Castaways would go.

At the two-minute mark, Patrick Nelson, the leading goal scorer in the Division 1 Vancouver Island Soccer League scored a goal for the Cowichan team, his eighth of the year.

Four minutes later, at the six-minute mark, Jesse Winter scored his first goal this year.

“We came out flying, that’s the first game where we came out scoring so early,” Cowichan coach Glen Martin said.

It set the template for a game that saw Cowichan prevail 5-0 in a very physical tilt, where lots of yellow cards were handed out by the referees to the Castaways.

Twenty-five minutes into the Oct. 3 game, Connor Crichton scored the team’s third goal.

The fourth and fifth goals were scored by Kevan Brown, at 32 and 79 minutes respectively.

“The key was the great start we had, two goals in six minutes is a dream start,” Martin said. “It was hard for the Castaways to overcome the fast start.”

After that, he said the game, “settled down.”

Because of the score, the Cowichan coach was able to play his whole team and in the second half put in two players with fresh legs.

“I don’t normally do that, but because the score was 4-0, I felt I could do so,” Martin said, adding that despite the score, the game itself wasn’t easy.

The result wasn’t that surprising to the veteran coach because last year, Cowichan beat the Castaways 3-0 and 4-0.

“We scored more goals over them this year,” he said.

Among game highlights were a shutout for goalie Joel Wilson. Brown was the teams most valuable player, with his two goals.
