With a combined five wins and one loss since April, with four of those wins coming by knockout, Williams Lake kickboxers Kanyon Gleeson and Lloyd Kenny have reason to smile.
The duo, who train out of Williams Lake Muay Thai, were back in Vancouver Nov. 18 at Surrey’s Bombay Banquet Hall and Convention Centre for a pair of kickboxing bouts.
The fight card, Bisla Fight Night Two, featured around 15 matches and was watched live by more than 2,000 spectators.
Gleeson, 17, was up early on the card and took on Tacoma, Wash.’s Kerry Grant in a 160-pound contest. Heading into the fight Grant held an undefeated 2-0 record.
Williams Lake Muay Thai trainer and owner Paul Rosborough said Gleeson swarmed his opponent, never giving him an opportunity to even get into the fight.
“He dropped him twice in the first round,” Rosborough said.
“The first was with a right hand and the other was with a leg kick. Then in the second round he came out and gave him another standing eight off a stiff jab and then hit him with a one, two and dropped him and that was it.”
Rosborough said Gleeson was thrilled to have earned a knockout in just his second kickboxing match.
“He’s pretty excited,” he said. “It’s one thing to beat a guy by decision but to knock him out in style … he looked like a pro in there.”
Next up was Kenny, 19, who took on Olympia, Wash.’s David Correa in the 210-pound contest — a rematch from a fight they had early October where Kenny earned a first-round knockout victory over Correa.
This time around the result was the same.
“Our plan was to take it into the second round but it didn’t get that far,” Rosborough said. “Lloyd hurt him with punches and when Correa tried to tie up he hit him with a left in the ribs. He went down and that was it. It was under a minute.”
Next up for the duo is a pair of fights Feb. 17 at Vancouver’s Fraser View Hall.
