Cody Shepheard of Qualicum Beach was selected in the 2016 WHL bantam prospect draft last week by the Kootenay Ice.

Cody Shepheard of Qualicum Beach, a product of the Oceanside Minor Hockey Association, can add a new line to his playing resumé: WHL draft pick.

Shepheard, a 6-foot-1, 162-pound right winger, was selected by the Kootenay Ice in the eighth round of last week’s Western Hockey League bantam draft.

The 2001-born skater, who turns 15 next month, skated last season for the Shawnigan Lake School’s bantam prep team in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL).

He scored nine goals and seven assists in 25 games, including a hat-trick in a Feb. 21 road game against Delta Hockey Academy. He added two goals in four playoff games for Shawnigan Lake.

Shepheard was one of 49 B.C. players selected in the draft, which draws players from a region spanning western Canadian provinces and western U.S. states.

He becomes part of Kootenay’s protected player list as a possible future prospect for the WHL club, which selected Shepheard with the first pick of the eighth round.
