Local teacher takes PNGA golf title

Maple Ridge’s Sandra Turbide took home the Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the Port Ludlow Golf Club in Port Ludlow, Washington last weekend.

Turbide is a teacher at Laity View Elementary School and a member at Swan-E-Set Bay Resort.

Turbide beat out 2005 and 2007 Women’s Mid-Am Champion Kareen Markle of Meridian, Idaho 2-1 in the match play format tournament, winning the event for the second year in a row. Turbide birdied the first hole to quickly go one-up, and started to put the pressure on by building a three-stroke lead through seven holes. Markle fought her way back into the match over the next seven holes to square the match through 14 holes. Turbide quickly regained the lead on the 15th and a wayward shot by Markle into the lateral hazard on 16 would put Turbide ahead. With a routine par on the downhill par-three, Turbide captured her second consecutive PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

Turbide is competing this week at the Canadian Amateur Championship in Duncan, where she held a two-stroke lead Thursday afternoon in the Mid-Master division (40 years and over) over Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay. Turbide shot an  eight-over 80 on the day and sits at 14-over for the tournament.
