The Sooke Loggers were undefeated at the 21st Annual Best of the West tournament in Santa Barbara on June 2-3.
The men’s fastball team went 6-0 in the tournament, making them the crowning champions.
During Round Robin, the Loggers defeated all three teams, which field manager Len Banner said was the easier side of the draw.
The Loggers proceeded to the playoffs and once again beat all three teams, including the Portland CR and Cal State Builders, who previously defeated the Loggers at the Vegas Roadtrip tournament in mid-April.
In the semi-finals, playing against Portland CR, the Loggers earned a score of 7-1.
In the finals, the Loggers defeated the Cal State Builders 5-1.
The two teams are also ranked higher in the league.
“We beat Portland pretty heavily… and they’re ranked 13th, and in the final we beat the Cal State Builders who are ranked 16th,” said Banner. “So that was the good part because I think we’re ranked 28th or 29th.”
Banner attributed their stellar performance to a change in defence strategy.
“We’ve been struggling all year with our defence, it was just unreal,” he said. “We moved a few guys around and we played really good defence, and hit the ball all weekend.”
The Loggers will be heading to Fargo, North Dakota for the Nafa Open — Holm Classic tournament on Thursday.
