The start of school coincides with the beginning of the season for several sports in Sooke.

The Sooke and District Minor Hockey Association still has limited space available for boys and girls between the ages of five to 17. (kindergarten to Grade 12) About 250 kids took to the ice last year, with about the same number expected for this season, said Dee Vivian, president of the Sooke and District Minor Hockey Association.

“We’re also looking for people with coaching experience to volunteer,” Vivian said. “It’s a great way to give back to your community.”

The Sooke Soccer Club expects higher numbers this year, with 85 per cent of registration completed already, said Laura Lockhart, president of the Sooke Soccer Club. More than 300 kids and 115 adults registered last year.

“Although registration closes on Sept. 8, we never turn away any player all season long unless teams are at maximum capacity,” she noted.

This year will mark the return of the U17-10 senior youth boys and girls teams. Lockhart said BC Soccer has accelerated the process for international students to be able to play. The process still takes four to six weeks.

“If host families can pass that along it would be great,” she added. For more information, check out sookesoccer.com/registration.

The Sooke Skating Club is gearing up for another season featuring Learn to Skate, CanSkate, Advanced Canskate, Junior, Intermediate, Power Skating for Hockey Development and figure skating programs.

Lessons begin on Sept. 11, and coach Lindsey Haldane said she is excited to start the season.

Registration takes place Tues. Spet. 4 and Thurs. Sept. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Lobby at Seaparc Leisure Centre. For more information, email sookeskatingclub@gmail.com.
