The first Lukas Whibley Memorial Award was handed out this past weekend to Eric Thompson, a second year senior midget box lacrosse player.

Thompson — who attends Ballenas Secondary School in Parksville — has been playing box lacrosse for the last three years and field lacrosse for four years.

He loves the game of lacrosse, specifically the camaraderie that goes along with being part of a team.

The award, in memory of Lukas Whibley, who tragically passed away at the age of 18 in 2013, is given to a senior box lacrosse player who best exemplifies integrity, leadership and sportsmanship, just a few of the traits that made Lukas Whibley such an incredible young man.

“I feel very honoured to be the first person to receive the Lukas Whibley Memorial Award,” Thompson said.

“It’s a very big honour. I’ve played with Lukas’ younger brother Ian for a few seasons and know all about Lukas, so it’s an honour.”
