The Lumby Stars brushed back the Salmon Arm Storm 4-3 in North Okanagan Super Atom Hockey League play Saturday at the Shaw Centre.
Sponsored by Terry’s Automotive and Irly Bird Building Centre, the Stars improved to 5-2, good for a share of third place, by getting goals from Bryden Murray, Tori Maltman, Kyle Wheeler and Mia Maltman.
Garrett Louis and Ryder Quibell supplied clutch assists, while goalie Cameron Smithson recorded several marvellous saves for the team’s hard hat. The Ranelli brothers – Noah and Andrew – were bold on defence.
The Stars grounded the host Kelowna Greyhounds 10-3 in exhibition play Sunday.
Quibell exploded for five goals to earn the hard hat, while singles came from Jace Catt, Tori Maltman, Quintin O’Neill, Mia Maltman and Murray. Assists were registered by Zachary Young, Wheeler, Mia Maltman and Tori Maltman.
The DCT Chambers Coyotes extended their Bantam Super League undefeated streak to six games by icing the Five Star Awards Cougars 7-3 and tying the first-place North Okanagan Knights 3-3.
Coyote d-man Colton Schaper-Kotter supplied 2+1 versus the Cougars, opening the offence with a blast in the first. Jacob Brewer fed Landen Harison to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.
Brewer pocketed two goals in the last half, while Chris Aldrich and Tavyn Best added singles to deal the Cougars their first loss of the season. Isaac Waldemaras was rock-solid for the win.
Talon Williams (2) and Elias Wery answered for the Cougars (2-1-3).
Jaden Stone buried a rebound of a wicked Schaper-Kotter point shot to give DCT (4-2-2) the lead against the Knights Saturday in Enderby.
Korden Haller, Devin Rempel and Nicholas Walker responded for the Knights (6-0-1) before Schaper-Kotter took a sweet pass from feisty d-man Colton Riguidel and went coast to coast and flicked a smooth-sailing, top-shelf snipe.
Brewer levelled the score off passes from Aldrich and Jacob Baycroft.
Cole Widrick’s unassisted marker with less than two minutes left gave the Winfield Bruins a 5-3 win over the Interior Savings Just Orange Saturday night at Priest Valley Arena.
Widrick stripped an Orange defender in the corner, drove to the net and tried to stuff the puck in short-side on goalie Sam Knox. The puck rolled up, struck Knox in the back and landed just across the goal line.
The slick Winfield centre added an empty netter on a bank shot for his third unassisted goal of the night.
Just Orange (1-4-2) twice rallied from two-goal deficits thanks to the tropical-looking Reece Hawthorne, back from a sunny vacation. The hustling centre scored all three goals.
Knox and Caedon Bellmann both made a number of sparkling saves in the Orange net, while d-man Tanner Bueckert made several key shot blocks.
The Lumby Tirecraft Bantam Laker girls lost 6-2 to Kelowna and bowed 4-0 to the Chase Mustangs in home action.
Jessica Chillhitzia and Taylor Cousins assisted on Vernon’s first goal by Wynter Vanderveen against Kelowna. Josey Nerling scored in the third, assisted by Chelsea Marshall.
Madison Johnson was busy in net versus the Mustangs, turning away 33 shots. Emily Wilson-Francois and Payton Kineshenko were stellar on the back end.
The Bannister Blazers moved into first place in the Pee Wee Super League by blanking Butcher Boys Snipers 7-0 and stopping North OK 5-2.
The Blazers (7-1) received brilliant play from net detectives Jared Ross and Eric Strutinski.
Brayden Riguidel jumpstarted the offence in Saturday’s shutout, assisted by Dawson Martian. Griffin Fletcher made it 2-0, from Aiden Skinner. Martian added a deuce in the second, while Trevor Moore, Fletcher and Skinner connected in the third.
Stingy defence by Moore, Tydon Louis, Tyler Kruysifix and Brenden James kept the Blazers well in front of Armstrong Sunday at PV. Jayden Veit (2), Martian, Skinner and Fletcher handled the offence.
The Stevenson Mechanical Bolts won twice in Pee Wee Super League play. First, the Bolts erased a three-goal deficit to upend the Vernon Rebels 9-5 at Priest Valley.
After the Rebels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Sapien Joe countered for the Bolts, driving the net off a draw. The Rebels pushed the score to 4-1, but Ronan Bedard buoyed the Bolts by burying his own rebound before the break.
In the second, Joe made another virtuoso score directly off a faceoff. Ashton Pede squared the affair with a 30-foot laser. The Rebels grabbed the lead again, and the Bolts answered as Jordyn Morris tipped Jackson Soucy’s point drive to Bedard, who bagged his second.
In the third frame, Bolt blueliner Quinn Soon rushed over the Rebel line and fired the winner. The Stevenson Mechanical crew pumped in three more in the final three minutes off the sticks of Chris Bond, Joe (hat trick) and Morris.
On Sunday at Kal Tire Place, the Bolts belted Winfield 8-1 with Joe and Bedard pulling hat tricks.
With Vernon up 2-0 at the break, Teja Sheldrake deflected a Levi Vanderdeen bomb and Bond capitalized early in the second half. Caleb James then danced through the Bruins and chipped a backhander.
Bedard banged home a rebound from Soucy, and then Joe tallied again to make it 6-0. After Winfield got its lone marker, Joe completed his trick on a wraparound. In the final frame, a hard-driving Easton Rayner set up Bedard for his third. Ethan Keber was sharp in the win.
The Sladen Moore Lakers Pee Wee/Atom Girls fell 7-2 to Kelowna and 8-0 to Merritt.
Emma Roine, assisted by Camryn Beacom and Sarah Claeys, and Claeys, unassisted, counted goals against Kelowna.
D-men Shelby Richard and Robyn Alexis skated miles, while forwards Ivy May Scott and Mackenzie Miller checked hard versus Merritt.
In Midget play, Talon Benefits Snakes rang up four third-period goals to defeat Vernon Seed Orchard Studs 5-2 Sunday at Civic.
Reece Schroeder of the Studs and Jeff Hiscoe of the Snakes traded first-period goals before Maguire Dickinson, from Parker Wadsworth and Dominic Loosli, made it 2-1 Snakes before the ice clean.
Hiscoe again pounded a shot home from the point early in the third, followed by two tallies from Dustin Beckner and a single from Martin Grenier.
Conner Fair, Cody Bauml and Logan Meier scored as Lumby stopped first-place Blackburn Excavating of Salmon Arm 3-1 in Midget play Sunday in Sicamous. Jacob Holland and Noah Foufoulas supplied standout goaltending.
