The L.V. Rogers Bombers field hockey team got their season underway with a pair of wins against Castlegar’s Stanley Humphries and Trail’s J.L. Crowe’s Grade 8-9 team on Sept. 18.

First up for the juniors was Stanley Humphries, who are rebuilding after losing most of their seniors. After a sluggish start the girls began to get into a rhythm and move the ball around with more success. The Bombers controlled much of the play en route to a 5-0 win on goals by Gioia Valk with a hat trick, and Elle Schlegel and Zoe Baxter each with singles.

In game two versus J.L. Crowe, the teams were fairly evenly matched but the Bombers found a way to get the win through two exchange students Valk and Schlegel as they combined to score four of the Bombers’ five goals for a 5-0 win with Baxter also providing a single.

The Bombers then played one more game against Stanley Humphries last Thursday, a 7-1 win, before they travelled to Oliver on Friday for an annual tournament. There they beat Chilliwack’s G.W. Graham 1-0 and downed Oliver 2-0 despite losing central midfielder Ella Peloso to a concussion.

Next up was Vancouver’s Sir Winston Churchill, who the Bombers lost 4-1 to as injuries took their toll on a team with no subs and several players playing injured. LVR capped the tournament with a 3-0 win over Surrey’s Gleneagle Secondary, which forfeited due to having too many injuries.
