Mission Record
Mission Secondary’s Bryce MacKenzie continued his leap into greatness at the B.C. High School Track and Field Championships in Nanaimo from Thursday to Sunday.
MacKenzie earned a trio of medals in his three jumping events to cap off an excellent season.
He earned gold in the junior men’s triple jump, establishing a new record in the event with a jump of 13.27 m. He beat the previous record set in 2014 of 12.84 m.
MacKenzie also won silver in the junior men’s long jump, with a jump of 6.50 m. He finished one-tenth of a metre behind winner Eric Che from Richmond’s J.N. Burnett Secondary School.
He wrapped up the event with a bronze in the junior men’s high jump, with a jump of 1.80 m. The trio of medals can be added to the three golds MacKenzie won at the Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships in May.
The only other local athlete to medal in the senior and junior meet was Mission Secondary’s Michael Lambert, who placed second in the senior men’s high jump. Lambert had a jump of 1.95 m to earn the silver.
Other Mission athletes to place in the top five included: Mission Secondary’s Jacob Walters (fourth, 300 m hurdles, junior men) and Mission Secondary’s Charlotte Daigneault (fifth, 1500 m race walk, junior girls).
Grade 8 medals:
Also over the weekend in Nanaimo was the Grade 8 B.C. Track and Field Championships, which saw one local athlete take home a pair of medals.
Heritage Park Secondary’s Harrison Trustham won a silver in the men’s 100 m hurdles and a bronze in the men’s 200 m hurdles at the event. Trustham finished about one-third of a second behind Walnut Grove’s Bob Nicol in the 100 m race.
The pair of medals will be added to the silver that Trustham won in the 200 m hurdles at the Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships in May.
