Kelowna’s MadKatz Boxing Club will host its final show of the season this Saturday, Aug. 24 at Centennial Hall in Rutland.
“We are ending this summer with a bang,” explains Madkatz boxing coach and promoter Geoff Lawrence.
Among the bouts on the 10-bout card will be Ken Huber from Kamloops defending his British Columbia cruiser weight title for the fourth time since winning it in Kelowna last August in a fight that earned Ken ‘Fight of the Year’ honours to go along with a WBC Western Canadian Championship.
“I’ve had a pretty good year” smiled the champ.
“Ken is probably the most active champion in the province,” saids Lawrence. “I have seen him in Prince George, Salmon Arm and Langley, now it’s time to bring him back to where it began for him” says Lawrence. “He is a local boy so it will be good for him to fight in front of his fans,” continues Lawrence.
Huber will face the first ranked contender Palvir Atwal from Bisla MMA in Surrey. Huber and Atwal are getting to know each other well as this is their second clash this year. The two met first in a non title bout here in Kelowna June 22. The bout solidified Atwal’s right to a title contest.
Extra special for Lawrence is the third appearance in the ring for ‘Hyena’ Vincenzo Lawrence. The coach’s son is 12 years old and loving the ring. “It’s the best time ever,” explains Vincenzo. MadKatz youth program has produced four competitors between the ages of 11 and 14.
“I’m very focused on my young athletes” adds coach Lawrence. “They are the future of the club and our sport. I feel like our advanced youth namely Paul Jung are among British Columbia’s best”. Paul will step into the ring for his third contest.
Originally from Germany Paul arrived in Canada in November 2008. By the following September Paul had joined MadKatz Boxing Club. “I only started boxing cause I was fat,” smiled the under spoken young fighter. “I liked fighting and needed to get in shape so I joined boxing.”
