If the closely-played 2013 Mann Cup continues as it’s been for the first two games, it will fall on the final day of the best-of-seven series to determine the winner.
The Six Nations Chiefs evened the series at one win each by taking Game 2 over the Victoria Shamrocks 10-8 at Bear Mountain Arena on Saturday. The Rocks won Game 1 in dramatic fashion, 5-4 on Friday.
Considering the quality lacrosse and excitement of the Mann Cup, Greater Victoria fans can selfishly look forward to a Game 5, be it bittersweet as it comes at the Shamrocks’ expense losing Game 2.
Saturday night was a back-and-forth affair with a total of eight goals in the first period, one less than Friday night’s total, suggesting there will likely be more offence in the Mann Cup than low-scoring totals of the Western Lacrosse Association final between the Shamrocks and Langley Thunder.
Six Nations’ star Cody Jamieson and Shamrocks attacker Jeff Shattler each scored two goals in the first period, which ended 4-4. Both finished with hat tricks.
The teams continued trading goals in the second period and went into the third period with a 6-6 tie. Kedoh Hill sparked the third period with his third goal of the night before the Shamrocks took the lead 8-7 on goals from Jesse King and Nolan Heavenor. But the toe-to-toe affair continued with the Jonny Powless tying it for the Chiefs. Jamieson scored the winner with three and a half minutes left and Colin Doyle netted an insurance marker in the final 40 seconds.
The Mann Cup continues with Game 3, 7 p.m. on Monday night at Bear Mountain Arena.
