The Maple Ridge Burrards won their second straight game to start the WLA season, defeating the Burnaby Lakers 6-4 in overtime.
The low score was not for lack of chances, as the Burrards outshot the Lakers 52-39 in the game.
But both goaltenders were game stars. Burrard Frankie Scigliano had a 0.897 save percentage, getting him the win and the game’s second star, while Burnaby’s Zak Boychuk was third star with a 0.902 save percentage.
The first star was Ridge’s high energy defensive ace Zack Porter, who had two goals in the game.
Burnaby led the game 4-2 after the second period, but the Burrards shut them down the rest of the way, and garnered enough offence to get the win.
Mike Mallory scored twice for Ridge, Spencer Evans got the overtime winner, and Aaron Davis scored into an empty net to put the game away.
On Friday, the Burrards will take on the Victoria Shamrocks at the capital city’s Q Center.
The Shamrocks are the team to beat again this year, and have started the season 3-0, having scored 42 goals already.
Then on Sunday, the Burrards will be back at home, hosting the Nanaimo Timbermen at 6:45 p.m. at Planet Ice.
The Timbermen have a win and a loss so far this season, but both losses were against the tough Shamrocks.
NLL playoffs
In the NLL final between the Saskatchewan Rush and the Buffalo Bandits, the Canadian team won the first game 11-9 in Buffalo.
Ben McIntosh, a Burrard, scored twice for the Rush, including the winner, and had three points. Another Burrard, Jarrett Davis had a goal and two assists for the Rush, including the set-up on McIntosh’s winner.
Game 2 of the best-of-three champions cup is set for Saturday in Saskatoon. Burrards fans will be hoping for a sweep, so the WLA club gets the pro players back sooner.
