The Fulton Maroons built up a 26-0 lead and hung on for a 26-14 Southern Interior Junior Varsity Football League win over the Westsyde Blue Wave Wednesday at Grahame Park.
Fulton, who led 19-0 at the half, got rushing touchdowns of 15 and four yards from Davron Polok, a 13-yard TD run by quarterback Tye Kitzman and a 35-yard TD reception by Caleb McCuaig.
Polok finished with 94 yards on a dozen touches, while Layne Greene racked up 35 yards on five carries and caught a 24-yard pass. Kitzman completed two of four passes for 59 yards and one pick.
Polok is eighth in league rushing with 317 yards and five TDs in three games. Ben Cummings of the Robert Bateman Timber Wolves in Abbotsford tops the loop with 939 yards and 16 touchdowns in five games.
Fulton head coach Mike Scheller was impressed with his team’s showing.
“They came out and played tough, smart football,” said Scheller. “They blocked well, ran hard, and were strong on their tackles. Westsyde got a couple of TDs late to make it a little interesting, but for the most part, we were in control of the game.”
Trevor Feeney led the Maroons with 11 tackles, while Greene supplied seven tackles and one fumble recovery. Polok turned in six tackles, while Ryan Buick had five and Brett Shaigec four.
Liam Curran ran a pick back for 34 yards, while Brandon Issac scampered 26 on his pick.
“Layne Greene had an outstanding game for us at offensive linebacker,” said Scheller. “He was everywhere and made four tackles for losses. He was very good at reading their offence and disrupting it. Our secondary also played well, picking two passes, and they slowed their pass game.
“Antoine Torossian made a nice pass defend near the end zone as well. Feeney was his usual stellar self in the middle, making a ton of tackles. Ryan Buick had to step in at middle linebacker, and he was solid all game for us there, making some tough hits.
“Our defence created turnovers, and gave our offence a short field to work with for most of the game. Defensive co-oordinator Kevin Stecyk called a great game.”
Fulton improved to 3-0 in league play and 4-2 overall, getting stellar play from offensive linemen Lucky Banga and Eric Brawn. The Maroons turned the ball over four times, including three inside the Westsyde red zone.
The VSS Panthers took on the host South Kamloops Titans Thursday. The Maroons visit South Kamloops on Tuesday.
