The AA Fulton Maroons bowed 2-1 (25-15, 20-25, 15-9) to the AAA Caledonia Kermodes of Terrace Saturday to finish sixth in the 32-team Thompson Rivers University Senior Girls Volleyball Classic.

After making the top-eight, the Maroons were swept 2-0 (25-5, 25-18) by the AAA Mt. Baker Trojans of Cranbrook.

“I was very happy with our round-robin result (second in pool at 2-1) which moved us into the Tier 1 Division top-16, playing AAA schools,” said Fulton coach Sharon Shaigec.

“It was a big win beating West Vancouver (2-1) in our first playoff game to put us in the top-eight teams.”

Shaigec gave props to captain Murriah Robertson for consistent setting and leadership.

“Abbey Hughes and Emily Dahl are both strong all-around athletes and were pounding the ball from the power position. Allison Hobkirk connected on quick attacks from Murriah Robertson, and recorded 12 blocks for the weekend.”

n The Vernon Christian School Royals senior boys fell 2-0 (25-21, 27-25) to the South Okanagan Hornets in semifinal play of their home tournament.

Middle attack Devin Hofsink was stellar from the service line and recorded multiple blocks.

Ethan Jameson was solid in serve receive and made a couple of desperation saves to keep the rallies alive.

The Royals placed third in pool play by grounding the St. Ann’s Crusaders of Kamloops 25-19, 25-18.

“Ben Molitwenik had a solid game at setter and right side while outside attack Aaron Botterill made a few kills and kept rallies alive with solid back row defence,” said Royals coach Chris Bannick.

Kaden Koshman closed out the final set with aggressive serves.  VCS then lost 2-1 (25-21, 22-25, 15-10) to the Cedars Christian Eagles of Prince George.

Captain Jacob Molitwenik led the team in kills from the power position.

Kelowna Christian Knights were tournament champions, defeating the Hornets 25-14, 25-16.

“Our team is young and are not used to playing with each other but there is a lot of talent and will be a good team as the season progresses,” added Bannick.
