The Fulton Maroons’ schedule leading up to the B.C. Senior Boys 7-aside Rugby Championships has been as frantic as the action on the field.
After placing second at the Okanagan Valley 7s championships last weekend, the Maroons travelled to Penticton Tuesday afternoon and laid a 47-5 beatdown on the Princess Margaret Mustangs.
Fulton’s offensive power proved too much for the Mustang defence, as the hard-running duo of Dalton Anderson and Greg Hyde seemed to score at will.
Backs Dan Ferreira and Jordan Mooney added tries of their own while winger Nick Kelsey dazzled his way through the Mustang backs to set up several scores.
Fulton faced stiffer competition in a 20-10 win over the Kalamalka Lakers Thursday at Grahame Park.
With players from both teams watching from the sidelines with injuries sustained at Valleys, the Maroons took control by winning ball possession from rucks. Pods of Fulton forwards continuously drove the ball forward, testing a stingy Kal defence.
Anderson opened the scoring with a solid run, breaking a few tackles to score under the posts. Then, on a heads-up play just before halftime, he took a quick penalty tap and scampered over the goal line, then converted it himself to make the score 12-0.
The Maroons extended their lead with an Anderson penalty kick in the second half.
Facing a headwind, the Lakers battled hard in the second half, getting some strong runs by their forwards to score their first try.
Fulton’s Brad Sarazin touched down in the corner, but Kal answered later in the game to complete the scoring.
The Maroons are competing in the B.C. championships this weekend at St. George’s School in Vancouver.
