She may have hung up her ski boots on the international and national circuit last season, but Alysson Marshall’s competitive nature couldn’t keep her from racing.
Last weekend, the former Canadian National Team member was crowned the Female Athlete of the Year at Lakehead University and won the Most Valuable Female Nordic skier Award.
She was the fastest female skier, setting a time of 2:21:44 in the gruelling 50-kilometre Sleeping Giant Loppet on March 8, winning $1,000.
The 28-year-old was also crowned the Ontario University Athletics Nordic Champion, marking a successful return to university after retiring from seven years on the national cross-country ski team.
Joining Marshall in Thunder Bay is her fiancé, Chris Hamilton, who is also a skier and trained in Canmore with her. They plan to be married this summer.
When Marshall is not training, she is studying to become a medical doctor. She says studying also helped her transition from the high-level of competition.
