Vernon’s Carol Martel is throwing third rocks for Team B.C. at the Canadian Senior Women’s Curling Championships in Summerside, PEI.
Martel and skip Karen Lepine of Langley (formerly of Vernon) were 1-5 after falling 9-4 to Vicky Barrett of Northern Ontario in the 11th draw Tuesday afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club
The winners will represent Canada at the 2014 World Seniors, at a site and date to be announced by the World Curling Federation.
Lepine bowed 9-8 to 2009 champion Colleen Pinkney of Nova Scotia in an extra end, lost 10-4 to Ann McKellar-Gillis of the Northwest Territories, fell 8-5 to Cathy Inglis of Saskatchewan, iced Nola Murphy of PEI 9-5 and lost 10-7 to Heidi Hanlon of New Brunswick.
Martel earlier this season helped Lepine win the provincial Masters Women’s championships in Lake Cowichan.
Meanwhile, Vernon’s Alysso Kyllo will play third for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack (skipped by Tiffany Krausher of Kamloops) when the CIS/CCA University Curling Championships open this morning at the Kamloops Curling Club.
Eight men’s and eight women’s teams will participate in a round-robin, with first-place teams advancing to the finals Sunday at 2 p.m. (PDT). The second- and third-place teams meet in semifinals Saturday night.
The WolfPack meet Veronica Smith of the University of PEI Panthers in today’s 10 a.m. draw.
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks of Waterloo, Ont. have taken four of five women’s crowns, with the University of Regina Cougars winning the other.
Thompson Rivers will be represented by skip Darren Nelson on the men’s side, where five different universities have won the championship.
Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher is the defending CIS/CCA champion, the 2012 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior and World Junior (in Östersund, Sweden) gold-medallist. He is representing the Alberta Golden Bears.
