The Shuswap Mariners fought their way to the top, taking the Vernon Men’s Slopitch League Championship last Wednesday.
The team lost early on in the playoffs so had to take the long and winding road to the win, making their way through the losing side of the tournament. When they made it to the finals, they faced the Brewers, who had won the championship each of the four previous years. The final game was a double-loss knockout, so the Mariners had to beat the Brewers twice. Although the Shuswap squad was up 22-3 in the first game, they nearly gave it away, with a final score of 29 to 27 in their favour. The second game was an 18 to 6 win. The Mariners’ head to Nationals in Kelowna in August.
