Chilliwack Chiefs defenceman Ben Masella is playing his final junior A games before moving on to collegiate hockey.
The 19-year-old Quebec native officially committed to the St. Lawrence University, joining current teammate Trevor Hills on the 2013-14 Saints roster.
St. Lawrence University is located in Canton, New York. The Saints compete in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference against the likes of Harvard, Yale, Quinnipiac, Brown and Princeton.
Masella has done well as a BCHL rookie, scoring three goals and 10 assists while playing all 56 regular season games for the Chiefs. It is his grittiness and defensive play that got him noticed. The six-foot-one and 210 pound Montreal native has 86 penalty minutes and has been one of Chilliwack’s steadiest defenders.
Masella is the eighth member of the Chiefs to commit to an NCAA program.
He and Hills join Austin Plevy (Merrimack), David Thompson (Penn State), Alexandre Perron-Fontaine (RIT), Mitch Gillam (Cornell), Philip Zielonka (Harvard), and Luke Esposito (Harvard).
