Master curlers qualify for provincials

Trail curlers will play against BC's best at the 2017 BC Masters Curling Championship in Cranbrook next month.

Two Trail-based rinks will compete at the 2017 BC Masters Curling Championships next month at the Cranbrook Curling Club from March 6-12.

The Master women’s rink comprised of skip Cathy McLeod of Castlegar, Grace Terness of Montrose, Trail’s Rose Beauchamp, and Fruitvale’s Myrna Reichmuth will join seven other Masters women’s teams from around the province at the tournament, after going undefeated at the Kootenay playdowns in Castlegar last month.

The McLeod rink went up against Team Cherie Baker from Creston, and Joan Fiedler from Cranbrook in a double-knockout round robin in the Kootenay Zone Playdowns. Fiedler defeated Baker 8-5 in the opening match, but fell to McLeod, 15-3, in the second game. McLeod played Fiedler twice in the final and defeated her 13-9 and 7-5 to claim the Kootenay representative.

On the Men’s side, three teams qualified at the Kootenay Playdowns including the men’s foursome made up of Nelson’s Garry Beaudry, and Trail curlers Brian LeMoel, Bill Van Beek, and Richard Faunt, who will join Gerry Kent of Cranbrook and Fizz McKie’s Sparwood rink at the Masters.

Women’s teams competing include Team Noble from Qualicum & District Curling Club, Team Strilesky from Nanaimo Curling Club, Team Klebe from Chilliwack, Cloverdale and Richmond curling clubs, Team Mick from Marpole Curling Club, Team Clark from Royal City and Langley curling clubs, Team Bentley from Quesnel Curling Centre and Team Blashko from Summerland, Oliver and Kelowna curling clubs.

The teams who qualified on the men’s side were Team Walker from Esquimalt and Glen Meadows curling clubs, Team Kent from Cranbrook and Elkford curling clubs, Team Rafter from Tunnel Town Curling Club, Team Pughe from Royal City Curling Club, Team Watson from Chilliwack Curling Club, Team Koffski from Kelowna Curling Club and Team McKie from Sparwood Curling Club.

The winners of the event will go on to compete at the 2017 Canadian Masters Curling Championships April 2-9 in Guelph, Ontario.

BC will play host to the 2018 Canadian Masters Curling Championships. The event will be co-hosted by Peace Arch Curling Club and Cloverdale Curling Club.
