Mayors Cup hockey game goes March 18 at Comox Valley Sports Centre

All funds from sixth annual fundraiser will stay in Valley to held local KidSport chapter

So ALL Kids Can Play continues to be the theme of the sixth annual Mayor’s Cup hockey game.  Fundraising for the Comox Valley chapter of KidSport is the focus for this year’s event to ensure that no kid is left on the sidelines due to financial barriers. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 18 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena #1.

Mayor Paul Ives will once again captain the Comox squad, who have successfully won the cup four out of five times. The Courtenay team will be missing their fearless leader, past Courtenay Mayor Greg Phelps. Some fans have been heard discussing whether this may work in favour of the Courtenay players.

They will be joined on ice by event organizer, Dr. Paul Helpard. Helpard is a local champion of children’s charities, dedicating much of his personal and professional time to helping children. It was his vision of assisting children that led to the creation of the Mayors Cup in 2011. The idea has taken off and has become an annual event that has raised funds for CV KidSport and BC Children’s Hospital Cleft Palate program where Helpard works each month. All funds this year will stay in the Valley to help the local chapter of KidSport.

Stu Tuneim, “The Blind Guy” (a reference to his profession, not a reflection of his goaltending ability) has been instrumental in bringing the Comox Rotary on board. Over the past three years the group has become a major supporter, donating $1,000 each year.

New this year is a raffle featuring two tickets to the Hedley concert in Victoria, May 19 which includes backstage passes and an autographed Canucks Alumni jersey. A donation of any amount will get you entered into the draw. Stop by Shoreline Orthodontics (100-1530 Cliffe Ave. in Courtenay) this week or attend Friday’s game for your chance to enter.

The CV chapter of KidSport was founded in 2008 to assist Valley kids under the age of 18 to participate in the sport of their dreams. Applications are available online at www.kidsportcomox.ca. Grants are typically $250/child with priority given to first-time applications.

“Our local chapter has also been working diligently with sponsors and donors to help provide sporting equipment that is not covered by the grants,” an event spokesperson said. “Show your support by attending the Mayor’s Cup, March 18, 7 p.m. at the Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena #1.”
