The Cloverdale Paint Black Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to shade the Kal Tire Smoke 10-9 in Mosquito baseball play Wednesday night at Lakeview Park.
The Smoke got a solid outing from Horatio Andow, who pitched 2 1/3 innings, striking out six. Nolan Stiven and Austan Van Den Brand both mowed down two Panthers.
McCool delivered the biggest hit of the rally, a walk-off single.
Holmes struck out six batters in two innings of work, Chayse Brumpton fanned five and Thompson sat down three batters for the Black Panthers.
Brumpton helped offensively going 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, Evan Kashuba reached base four times with a hit and three walks and scored twice while Holmes and Thompson each scored a pair of runs.
Kal Tire was led offensively by Eric Pastro, who went 4-for-4 and scored two runs, and Brennan Braddick and Andow, who both went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
In Okanagan Midget AA Baseball League action at Kelowna’s Lombardi Park, the host Sun Devils knocked off the Vernon Atrium Hotel Canadians 11-6.
Ethan Sawka took the mound for his first start of the season. “Slinger,” as Sawka is known to his coaches and teammates, is a hard-throwing right-hander with a unique sidearm delivery.
Sawka walked five and struck out four in five innings of work. Dakota Becker, celebrating his 16th birthday, pitched the final two innings.
