McDonald wins bronze at Callaghan Valley nordic event

Barriere’s Alex  McDonald recently brought home a bronze medal from the Haywood Norams Under 23 World Junior Trials at Whistler Olympic Park.

Local Nordic racers had a busy weekend traveling with the Overlander Ski Team to Whistler Olympic Park, on  January 13,14, and 15, 2012

It was there that the Haywood Norams Under 23 World Junior Trials, and the rescheduled BC Cup #1 Race event was held.

Barriere’s Alex McDonald was one of four Overlander Race Team members to earn medals in the Callaghan Valley Nordic venue.

McDonald placed fourth in the Saturday, Jan. 14, 5 km skate race; then followed on the  Sunday afternoon racing his first ever 7.5 km distance classic race to place third and earn a bronze medal in the BC Cup series.

Team mate Garrett Tremblay, also from the Barriere area had strong races, and achieved personal best performances during the exciting high caliber competition that prevailed the event.

Both McDonald and Tremblay started cross country skiing with the local North Thompson Rec Society programs and now train year-round with the Kamloops team.

Next stop for competition for the pair is the Canmore, Alberta, Haywood NorAm Western Championships on Jan. 19, 20, and 21.
