Megan Komori Kennedy of Merville helped Team Canada 2016 finish fourth overall at the 20th American Quarter Horse Youth World Cup in Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia.

This international equestrian showdown, comprised of 13 teams from around the world, took place from June 23 to July 3.

Throughout the competition, each country rode for gold, silver and bronze medals in cutting, reining, western horsemanship, trail, ranch riding, hunt seat equitation, hunter under saddle and showmanship.

The Youth World Cup is more than just a competition – it offered a chance for international American Quarter Horse enthusiasts to learn from the industry’s leading riders and trainers.

Team Canada collectively earned 84 total points to earn fourth place. Team USA was first with 200 points; Team Australia was second with 118 points; and Team Germany was third with 110 points.

Kennedy, one of five Team Canada competing riders, placed as follows:

Western Horsemanship – 3rd place (bronze medal) in Show A; Hunt Seat Equitation – 9th place in Show A, 4th place in Show B; Hunter Under Saddle – 12th place in Show A, 3rd place in Show B; Showmanship – 6th place in Show A.

The Canadian Quarter Horse Association (CQHA) notes that 18-year-old Kennedy is a strong all-around competitor with a focus on Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation classes.

“Megan has been showing for over 10 years, starting with 4-H and working her way up to the AQHA circuit where she has earned several national championships.

“A highlight of Megan’s riding career has been competing at the All American Quarter Horse Congress and being a finalist in all her events including Showmanship, Horsemanship and Hunt Seat Equitation.

“Outside of horses, Megan is an active soccer player and volunteer in her community as well as at school where she is a peer tutor for science courses. Megan is excited to be part of Team Canada in this unique competition and brings a strong background in riding and showing young horses, team spirit, and dedication to Tamworth, Australia,” the website notes.

“Representing Canada at international events such as this one, is a costly initiative and Team Canada members and their families are each responsible for fundraising a portion of their travel expenses,” notes Marnie Somers of the CQHA.

“Team Canada appreciates the many generous sponsors who have stepped up to the plate. To see the Team Canada members and these valuable team sponsors, visit the Team Canada 2016 section of the CQHA’s website.

“The CQHA Board of Directors congratulates the entire 2016 youth team, coach and manager and their support groups, both on site and back at home, for their cumulative efforts. You were great ambassadors for Canada and we are very proud of you,” Somers stated.
