The Terrace Midget rec hockey team will face off against the best tier three teams in the province here in Terrace starting Sunday, March 19.

Teams will compete throughout the early part of the week, clinching with the championship finals on Wednesday, March 22, at 8 p.m.

Organizing the event has been challenging this year, due to confusion from BC Hockey about the number of teams, which was still being worked out late last week.

Teams are coming from as far as Whitehorse and South Okanagan, and though competition will be fierce, Terrace coaches Rob Bell and Dave Kawinsky both said they feel chances are good for the Terrace Totem Ford Midgets.

“I have a good feeling about our chances,” said Kawinsky.

“One thing we have on our team, is we play very consistent — we don’t play really well one game and then [poor the next]…. And we have a good group, we’re very well rounded.”

The team has secured first in two tournaments this season, and silver in three others, and won zones in Kitimat Feb. 19-21.

Bell says the boys play better on the road, with a disciplined curfew and fewer distractions, but he was confident in the team and the leadership among the boys.

Team captain Gianni Cormano echoed the same confidence, adding that he’s excited to play provincials at home.

“To play in front of our hometown is going to be awesome,” he said, noting that the key to victory will be focus.

“We’ve all got to be on the same page… working for each other and working hard,” he said. Aiming for the goal “to be provincial champions,” Cormano says the team has to be “together with the same goal in mind.”

“I think we’re ready,” he said.
