Sinking a hole-in-one at 175 yards proved to be too tough a task for people who gave it their best shot at the Psalm 23 Transition Society’s $1-million Hole-in-One fundraiser.

The 10-day contest, ended Sunday on hole No. 10 at the 108 Resort Golf Course without a million-dollar winner, but three top finalists took home a nice share of the total $11,000 worth of prizes being offered.

Shane Wilkie came the closest, landing his ball 22 feet 6.5 inches away from the hole. Chris Stevens was second, being off the mark by 53 feet 3 inches, and David Pukacz was third at 73 feet 9.5 inches away from a million-dollar shot.

They were among 10 semi-finalists who shot for one of three berths in the final. Lynden Jeffrey, 14, was also in that group and finished fifth overall. Brett Dickau, a Psalm 23 resident was sixth.

The first nine days of the contest took place at the driving range where a target pin was placed at 98 yards. The top 7 closest to the pin each day and five randomly drawn shooters qualified for Sunday’s quarter-final.

The event raised $3,000 for Psalm 23 Transition Society’s training centre, a 59 Mile area rehabilitation facility for men who may be homeless or battling addiction.

Society executive director Marvin Declare says the event was more about building relationships and introducing themselves to the community.

“After listening to people who participated, I think we accomplished that and we look forward to doing this again next year.

“We thank all who participated and the many, many donors, and want them to understand how important their part was. We also owe a debt of gratitude to Jeff Kendy at the 108 Resort for hosting our event over the 10 days, and to the volunteers.”
